meridian-little-theater-ellie-masseyOn July 28th, 2015,The Downtown Optimist Club of Meridian renewed it’s support for the Meridian Little Theatre’s CenterStage Youth Workshop by presenting a check for $1,000 to Board Member Ellie Massey who came to our meeting to provide the DTOC with an inside glimpse of the amazing benefits children derive from participation in the Arts.

Meridian Little Theatre’s CenterStage Youth Workshop is geared toward students who have completed first through sixth grades, in the summer the CenterStage Workshop offers students ideas and skills to use in developing their dramatic abilities. During the week, participants experience all aspects of live theatre: acting, singing, dancing and staging. Past experience is not required. Sessions begin at 9:00 AM each day and end promptly at noon. The workshop is directed by Sidney Covington and Carol Sue Wiggins, with MLT Director Ronnie Miller serving as advisor. While there is a tuition fee for the workshop, donations such as the one made by the Downtown Optimist Club are used to provide scholarships to students who would otherwise not be able to afford the tuition. You can learn more about the workshop by clicking here.

In October, a casting call goes out to kids all over our community and several hundred children go through the casting process to be selected to participate in the CenterStage Youth Production usually held live at the theater during January. In January, 2016, the play staged & acted by the youth will be “The Magical Land of Oz.” School Performances will be January 11-15 and a evening show has been added to the schedule at 6:30pm on January 15th, 2016 which will be open to the public with reserved seating.
