DTOC Donates To Newspapers In Education – 2016

DTOC President Daniel Stewart presented a check to James W. Rainey from The Meridian Star Newspaper to support their Newspapers In Education program at the March 29th, 2016 meeting of the Downtown Optimist Club.

The Meridian Star has been providing newspapers to classrooms all over East Mississippi for many years and the DTOC has been donating to help offset the costs of the program on an annual basis. Mr. Rainey was in attendance to receive the donation, but also to provide details on the scope and reach of the Newspapers In Education program and he provide the club with a great overview of how the newspapers are used by educators to help improve the reading skills of students, raise their awareness of history and current events as well as providing students with information about events taking place in the world and in their community.
